Importance of Youth Entrepreneurial Scholars Program:

Wealth inequality in the United States is defined as the unequal distribution of assets among residents of the United States. Wealth includes the values of homes, savings, personal valuables, automobiles, businesses, and investments. Wealth inequality in the United States has grown significantly from 1989 to 2016. Unfortunately, there has been little progress in narrowing racial and ethnic wealth gaps over the past several decades.

Several solutions have been proposed as solutions for wealth disparity in the United States. Some include expansion of housing stock, universal access to childcare, create a trust for every American baby, expand social security, provide every American a federal savings account, crack down on white-collar crime, and improvement in national infrastructure program. John A. Powell with Haas Institute recommended six ways to minimize the rising economic inequality prevalent in the United States: increase minimum wage, expand the earned income tax, build assets for working families, invest in education, make tax code more progressive, and end residential segregation. We propose a complementary approach: designing an entrepreneurial program targeting minority students.

The Youth Entrepreneurial Scholars (YES) Program is designed to give talented and highly motivated high school juniors and seniors an intensive introduction to corporate business education – and it shows them that business can be fun, exciting, and rewarding. Students taking part in the program will participate in coursework on various topics as management, marketing, business finance, business writing, business planning, and much more; workshops to strengthen their public speaking skills, learn the basics of running and managing a corporation, and finally write business proposals or an Action Plan related to starting a company as an entrepreneur. The Action Plan is an exciting aspect about the program’s curriculum. The business simulation takes students through the entire process of starting a company as an entrepreneur. Students will pitch their business ideas to mentors, faculty, and judges to win awards. Another exciting component of the program allows the students to engage with successful local, nationally, and internationally renowned guest speakers from the surrounding community. Upon completion of the program, students receive a Certificate of Completion, an invaluable experience, and connections with business leaders in Holly Springs, MS and Memphis, TN. Upon completion of the program the students will be better positioned to make powerful contributions to the economic viability and sustainability of the community. This unique opportunity will also pay students a stipend in addition to the invaluable educational and work experience.
